The clear goal of the Graduate School is that graduating students should have the required knowledge and experience to exploit neutron methods as an experimental tool for their research. In addition, they will acquire a deep knowledge within the specialized topic of their PhD research project. The syllabuses of the courses recognise that many projects are interdisciplinary and that with broadening participation in neutron scattering, the will be taken by students from many disciplines. Not only are previous qualifications of participants very varied, their interest and plans for subsequent careers span many areas.

Graduates of the School may eventually become established researchers in fields that depend on results from scattering experiments, some others may be involved in design of instruments or writing new software for analysis of scattering. The training will prepare for careers in industry or academic research as well as other roles in management, communication etc.

The training will include topics other than neutron scattering both in specific science areas of chemistry, physics, biomedical sciences that are relevant for particular students and in more general transferable skills such as scientific writing, ethics, sustainability, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, effective presentations, and interaction with the media. Elements of these topics are mandatory at different levels for PhD students enrolled at the various universities. Success in the courses will help lead to both the timely completion of a dissertation and to excellent employment prospects.
